Gardening in September

As soon as you see “September” is written on the calendar page, autumn approaches with rapid strides – a beautiful season that, thanks to the low sun, always bathes autumn flowers and foliage in a beautiful light. But there is still enough to do in the garden: harvesting and processing, preparing beds for the next year, planting bulbs, tidying up and much more.

Sowing autumn seeds

At the beginning of September radishes, Asian salads, chard and spinach can be sown. Field salad for the spring harvest is also sown now.

Plant bulbs

In order to enjoy colorful tulips, daffodils, crocus, ornamental garlic and many more in spring, some work is needed in autumn. The flower bulbs have to be planted in the earth, because bright colors and rich blossoms for the garden, balcony and terrace in the coming spring are prepared in autumn.

Snowdrops, crocuses and hyacinths are the first messengers of spring, which show their colorful splendor from February on. But before that there’s a lot of work to be done in September. Timely planting is crucial for successful growth, because bulbs planted too late are more sensitive to frost and do not flower as abundantly. The bulbs should then be planted in October at the latest.

Planting onions and garlic

Now is the perfect time to plant onions and garlic. Winter onions are planted in September/October and can already develope roots. Harvesting can therefore take place as early as the end of June.

Garlic can be planted in autumn or spring. The ideal time is autumn from September to October, because growing in autumn is ideal for good root development, so that the garlic can sprout as early as spring. They also produce larger tubers.

Lawn maintenance in autumn

Early September is an ideal time to sow lawn seeds. In September, the summer drought is usually over and the ground is still warm enough for the grass seeds to sprout quickly.

When temperatures are falling, the lawn should be mowed to a height of about five centimeters: If the grass is longer, it can rot; if it is too short, the roots lack protection against the cold. Leaves that have already fallen down can be mowed with the grass.

Have a nice September in your garden!
